US releases secret list of Bagram prisoners

The United States has released a previously secret list containing the names of more than 600 being held at its Bagram detention centre in Afghanistan. The list of prisoners contains 645 names but details such as nationalities, where the prisoners were captured and how long they have been held have been blacked out.

It has been published in response to a freedom of information lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. The military jail at Bagram was set up soon after the US-led intervention in Afghanistan. The CIA has been accused of torturing and mistreating terrorism suspects at the prison. Along with Abu Ghraib in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, it has become a symbol of the harsh treatment of detainees including alleged torture under the Bush administration.
