The US has rejected Islamabad's request to mediate between India and Pakistan over issues like Kashmir. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Washington cannot dictate the foreign policy of any of the two South Asian countries. Ms Clinton was addressing a joint press conference with her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi after the first round of the strategic dialogue between the US and Pakistan in Washington.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan has been demanding a nuclear deal with the US similar to the one Washington has with India. But, the US has been taking the demand coolly due to proliferation concerns.

Authoritative sources told PTI that even consideration of Nuke issue could take years, as Pakistan first needs to convince the world in particular the US and its lawmakers the concerns they have about the nuclear non-proliferation issue.

Clinton said the US would sign a letter for "significant road infrastructure" in Pakistan's troubled northwest. She said the government agency – USAID will also sign a deal for rehabilitation of three thermal power plants to help ease Pakistan's chronic energy shortages. But, there are no concrete US assurances, neither on the civilian nuclear deal.

In an apparent reference to India's stance that it can't resume composite dialogue with Pakistan, until Islamabad takes concrete action against all those who are responsible for terror attacks in the country, Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Shah Mahmood Qureshi said he is confident that India will have to revisit its Pak-policy soon.
