US President Donald Trump has scrapped an Obama-era amnesty programme that granted work permits to immigrants who arrived in the country illegally as children. This move is likely to impact 8 lakhs undocumented workers including more than seven thousand Indian-Americans. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions yesterday announced the revocation of the programme also known as the Deferred Action for Children Arrival (DACA).<br/><br/>In a tweet, President Donald Trump, said he now looked forward to working with both the Democrats and Republicans in Congress to address immigration reform.<br/><br/>The announcement was greeted with protests from across the country.Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the White House demonstrating against President Trump.<br/><br/>Former US President Barack Obama decried his successor Donald Trump's decision to end an amnesty and called it "wrong," "self-defeating" and "cruel." <br/><br/>He said the Trump administration's decision on DACA is not about fixing the immigration system.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Mexico condemned the US decision. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry deeply regreted the cancellation of the DACA. It said it had a "moral imperative" to urge the Trump administration and Congress to quickly resolve the legal gray<br/>area now affecting people formerly protected from deportation under the program.<br/><br/>India ranks 11th among countries of origin for the DACA students, according to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services statistics available till March 31st of this year.
