US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to support the UN effort to peacefully resolve the nearly seven-year-long Syrian civil war. <br/><br/>The White House said the two leaders stressed the importance of ending the humanitarian crisis in which millions of Syrians have been displaced from their homes. <br/><br/>Mr Putin called US President Donald Trump and Middle Eastern leaders yesterday, one day after his meeting with Assad in Sochi, southern Russia. <br/><br/>According to the Kremlin, Putin told Trump that Assad confirmed his commitment to the political process, constitutional reform, and presidential and parliamentary elections. <br/><br/>Putin asked the leaders to approve the continuation of the Assad government at a time when the Syrian military is in an overwhelmingly advantageous position against the opposition forces. <br/><br/>Assad's government and Syrian opposition forces are scheduled to begin peace talks in Geneva next week.<br/><br/>Russia supports the Assad government, but opposition forces, and the US and other countries that are backing those forces, are making demands Assad should step down.
