The US President Barack Obama is returning early from his Christmas holiday in Hawaii as the deadline to reach a deal to avoid, what is known as, the fiscal cliff approaches. Unless a compromise is found, tax increases and huge spending cuts come into force on 1 January, threatening to tip the US back into recession. Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill are at loggerheads over how to avert the threat.
