US Open: Venus, Muguruza in womens single & Cilic, Tsonga in mens single advance to second round

In US Open Tennis, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, Venus Williams, Garbine Muguruza, Marin Cilic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are among the top players who advanced to the second round last night. In Women's Singles, while local girl and 9th seed Venus Williams defeated Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia, third placed Muguruza beat American Varvara Lepchenko. In Men's Singles, fifth seed Cilic edged past Tennys Sandgren, while eighth placed Tsonga saw off Marius Copil of Romania. Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova, this year's Wimbledon and Australian Open winner Roger Federer and Angelique Kerber will play their first round matches today. Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, last year's winner Stanislas Wawrinka and Serena Williams are not taking part in the tournament. Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and other Indian players will begin their Doubles campaigns tomorrow.
