US Open Tennis: Clijsters wins women singles title; Nadal to clash with Djokovic in men's final today

Belgian Kim Clijsters has won the women singles title at the U.S. Open. She overpowered seventh seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-2, 6-1 in exactly one hour to successfully defend her women's singles title, her third overall at the tournament. The win makes the second seeded Clijsters the first woman to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles since Venus Williams did so in 2000 and 2001. Clijsters also won the title in 2005. Clijsters dominated the match, winning 78 percent on her first serves. The 27-year-old married mother will receive 2.2 million dollars for her win.The men's final will be held today between Rafael Nadal of Spain and Novak Djokovic of Serbia. A report from our sports desk Nadal stormed into the US Open final for the first time in his career, easing past Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. He reached the last four in New York for the third straight year without losing a set and he had dropped serve just once in 77 service games. The stakes are high for the Spaniard as he bid to reach the US Open final for the first time at his eighth attempt. A win today would make him the seventh man in history, and the second youngest, to win all four Grand Slam titles – Australian, French, Wimbledon and US during his career.
