In Men's singles No 2 seed Nadal posted a 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 win over 98th ranked Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan while in Women's singles Serena Williams raced to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, defeating Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia.
