US missile attacks kill 6 militants in Pakistan

Pakistani officials say two suspected U.S. missile strikes killed at least six militants in the country's northwest on Thursday. The officials said the strikes occurred within minutes of each other near Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region along the Afghan border. They said a car was struck in one attack, killing two militants. At least two missiles hit a nearby compound, destroying it and killing four people. Authorities believe many Taliban and al-Qaida members live in the are and use it to stage attacks inside Afghanistan. The strikes have been credited with killing several top militant commanders. U.S. officials do not acknowledge the missile strikes from unmanned aircraft in Pakistan, which are unpopular among the local population. The Pakistani government publicly condemns the drone strikes as undermining its sovereignty, but regional experts say Islamabad privately coordinates with the U.S. government on selecting targets.
