US military begins airdropping food into earthquake-hit Haiti

The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to send 3, 500 more UN peace keepers to Haiti to help support eartquake relief efforts. 1500 of those sent will be officers and the others military personnel.<br/><br/>The Haitian government, meanwhile, has said that the number of people killed in last week's devastating earthquake has risen to 75,000, while 2 lakh 50,000 were injured and a million left homeless. It said, the beleaguered Caribbean nation is in desperate need of temporary shelters, water, food, medical supplies and counsellors. One week ago, Haiti was hit by a massive 7.0-magnitude quake which shattered homes and buried citizens under tonnes of rubble across a broad area around the capital Port au Prince.<br/> <br/>The US military is increasing its operations in Haiti to help improve security and speed up the distribution of aid. 20 helicopters carrying soldiers touched down near the shattered Presidential palace in Port au Prince. On the outskirts of the capital, two thousand American marines have established a beach-head where they will bring emergency supplies ashore.
