US justifies Obama not meeting Dalai Lama

Amid accusations of Barack Obama bowing to Chinese pressure and not meeting the Dalai Lama, who is on a five-day visit to Washignton, the White House on Tuesday justified the President's decision saying, a strong US-China relationship is beneficial to the cause of Tibetans. Robert Gibbs, the White House Press Secretary, told reporters at his daily press briefing that America's strong relationship with China and a good dialogue with them, allows Washignton to talk to them about the cares and concerns of the Tibetan people. China had earlier warned it was resolutely opposed to foreign countries receiving the Tibetan spiritual leader. Gibbs said it was mutually decided that Obama would meet the Dalai Lama after the president's visit to China next month. He said the US administration has raised the Tibetan issue during meetings with the Chinese leaders.
