The US Secretary of State, Ms. Hillary Clinton has said that US-India relationship will be redefining in the 21st century. Addressing students and popular personalities in Chennai, Mrs Clinton said that India’s future and its market in the world economy is worth watching. Calling India a prosperous nation in the region, she appreciated India’s approach in developing the lives of the poorest of the poor. Complimenting the friendly relations between both the nations, Hillary said that both the countries are abiding by deeper bonds and friendly ties in various sectors. She said that the common interests are stopping terrorism and sponsoring broad growth and deepening strategic ties. Pointing out to India’s growing leadership in the world, she said that India is taking a rightful place. She said that US has recognized that India should be given a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. Appreciating the role of the Indian Election Commission she said that its role is of global standards and the same procedures were helpful in conducting elections in Egypt and Iraq. Commenting on the Look East Policy, Ms. Clinton said that India’s role is not only in East Asia but it goes beyond that to Mobilising strategic cooperation, security, trade and comprehensive trade deals in the region. Regarding the ASEAN Regional forum, she said that US- India-Japan dialogue to enhance co operation would be beneficial. Mrs Clinton felt that New Delhi should continue dialogue with the Burmese Government to release other political prisoners. She also said that every citizen of Sri Lanka deserves to live with dignity and also hope for that opportunity. India should work forward to its commitment to improve relationship with Bangladesh. Mrs Clinton said that President Obama recognized when he say that US Looks forward to a reformed UN Security Council that includes India as permanent member. Mrs Clinton also said that India and US are working together through G 20 which has come the premier forum for international economic co operation to promote clean energy and to seek climate change solutions is a partner ship that will accelerate research and deployment ofeffective technology She said that it has enabled both countries to work together to make the UN Conference on Climate change coming up in Durban a success. Referring to Afghanistan she said that withdrawal of US Forces will continue till 2014. She also said that US wants a stable independent Afghanistan and a region free from Al qaeda. Appreciating India’s efforts in assisting Afghanistan she said that it should help the country to advocate the reconciliation process in its road to recovery. To curb nuclear proliferation, Mrs Clinton said that US is working together with the international community to address and share concerns about provocative countries like Iran. She said that the US has called for Iran to meet international obligation of the IAEA. She said that US is working with India who is currently a non permanent member of the UN Security Council to persuade Iran’s leaders to change course. In another development, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha on Wednesday expressed concern over the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka to the visiting US Secy of State Mrs Hillary Clinton. During her brief interaction today, she emphasized the need for tamils to be resettled in their own areas. During the course of the discussions, Ms. Jayalalitha expressed her concern over reduction in issuance of H1B visas even though in terms of number of Visas issued. The US Secretary of State also expressed her desire for a State to State programme between Tamil Nadu and the States in US for various industrial and economic programmes.
