US President Barack Obama says, building new relationship with countries like India is part of his efforts to shape a world that favours peace and prosperity. Delivering his annual State of the Union address to the US Congress, he said his administration has built a new partnership with India, reset its relationship with Russia and strengthened Asian alliances. Highlighting the importance of emerging markets like India and China, he referred to the recent agreements with both India and China that will support more than two and a half lakh jobs in the United States. He warned that the US risked losing out to countries like India and China in areas like in education, technology and research as they have undertaken investments in these areas. Obama also unveiled his blueprint to maintain American leadership in an increasingly competitive world marked by the surge of nations like India and China. The blueprint has four key pillars–innovate, educate, build, reform and responsibility. He said the USshould out out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the global competition. He said India and China have realised that with some changes of their own, they could compete in this new world. So they started educating their childrenearlier and longer, with greater emphasis on math and science. They are investing in research and new technologies. On the other hand, Obama said, the quality of the US’ math and science education lagged behind them. The country had fallen to ninth rank in terms of the proportion of young people with a college degree.Obama also renewed his resolve to start withdrawing his country's troops from Afghanistan in July this year even as he warned of tough fighting ahead in the nine-year-old war.
