US denies reports of Pak nuclear deal

<br/>The United States has denied reports that it is mulling negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan. This was stated by a spokesman of the US Embassy in Islamabad yesterday. The spokesman clarified that the United States has not entered into any negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan. The statement comes a day after media reports said Washington may discuss Islamabad's request for cooperation in setting up nuclear power plants in the country. The spokesman, however, added that Washington is committed to helping Pakistan address its real and growing energy needs, and it looks forward to cooperating with Pakistan in ways that are compatible with Pakistan's economic, environmental and security needs and with US interntional commitments and policies.<br/><br/> A US-based Pakistani newspaper had yesterday quoted American Ambassador Anne W Patterson as saying that Washington is beginning to have a discussion with the Pakistan government on its desire to tap nuclear energy. <br/><br/> New Delhi has expressed hope that the Washington will keep in mind Pakistan's track record on proliferation before taking any view on the issue. External Affairs Minister SM Krishna urged the US to take on board its record on Pakistan's record on proliferation while discussing its energy needs.
