US calls to ensure nuclear material do not fall into hand of terrorist

The United States has called for devising a comprehensive strategy to ensure that nuclear material and weapons do not fall into the hands of terrorists.

The statement assumes importance in the wake of fears being expressed that terrorist groups including the Al-Qaeda are trying to get nuclear weapons and material.

In an exclusive interview to AIR correspondent in Washington, the spokesman of the US National Security Council Mike Hammer said, the strategy for securing nuclear material must include action by individual countries and at the collective level by international community.

In reply to a question he said, the US administration is aware of the attempts being made by terrorists organizations including the Al-Qaeda to obtain nuclear weapons and maintained that President Obama has been advocating to secure nuclear material.

Experts say there is enough nuclear material across the Globe to build one lakh twenty thousands nuclear bombs and in many countries nuclear stock piles are not adequately protected.

Hammer said a communique will be issued at the end of the on-going nuclear security summit being held at the initiative of the US President.

Referring to Iranian Nuclear Programme he said this will not form part of the discussion in the Summit but President Obama will take up this issue with the world leaders in the bilateral meetings.

Hammer urged the Iranian Government to come to terms with international laws on proliferation including the rules by IAEA to be responsible member of the international community.
