The visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia and Central Asia, Robert O Blake today called for early resettlement of the remaining war displaced Tamil civilians in the north as one of the measures to bring about reconciliation in the country in the post war scenario. Blake who is on a day’s visit to Sri Lanka told reporters that the country now has a unique opportunity to forge lasting peace and prosperity after decades of war.”Achieving reconciliation will be a key element in such peace”, he said. He maintained that more steps can be taken to improve the reconciliation process in the country. “One part of achieving reconciliation will be to finish resettling all internally displaced persons as soon as possible”, he said. “Another key part of reconciliation will be to assure accountability to redress just wrongs”, Blake said, “A last pillar of reconciliation will be to advance democracy and human rights”, he said.The comments of Mr. Blake assume in the light of the recent tiff between Sri Lanka and the UN over the decision of the world body’s Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to appoint a three member experts panel to advice him on accountability aspects of the alleged excesses in the last phase of the war between the island nation’s security forces and the LTTE which ended in May year.The US Assistant Secretary, who was Washington’s envoy in Sri Lanka prior to his current assignment, said that during his breakfast meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa he had discussed the subject of power sharing along with several other issues.President’s House sources said that the two sides examined ways and means of further strengthening bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the United States and identified several areas for the expansion of bilateral cooperation.The US Assistant Secretary offered to increase training facilities for Sri Lankan officials and others in the United States.Blake is scheduled to visit the Maldives tomorrow and hold discussions with both leaders of the opposition and the ruling combine on the recent political crisis in the country.
