US asks Iraq to form a new government at the earliest

The United States has urged Iraqi leaders to form a new government at the earliest. The US envoy to Baghdad, Christopher Hill made the comment after two winning candidates from last month's parliamentary ballot were disqualified. Hill admitted that progress in government formation was lagging almost seven weeks after elections. A judicial panel in the country on Monday eliminated two winning candidates and 50 others who failed to secure parliamentary seats on the charges of their affiliation with the dissolved Baath Party of former President Saddam Husain. The disqualifications drew anger from the coalition of former premier Iyad Allawi, who alleged that his supporters have been besieged in an attempt to change the result.
