US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns said on Thursday, China is endangering peace in Southeast Asia with its "overreaction" to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, reiterating that there is no shift in America's 'one-China policy' as alleged by Beijing. Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2, becoming the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the self-ruled island claimed by China, which conducted a series of provocative military drills in retaliation to the visit. Speaking online at the Milken Institute Asia Summit in Singapore, Burns said Beijing's "overreaction" to Pelosi's visit to Taipei risks a peaceful resolution.
''
''Burns, who was appointed US Ambassador to China in March, said countries in Southeast Asia should also be concerned about China's aggression in the Taiwan Strait, given its importance as a major shipping route. Burns said China is trying to erase the 68-year-old median line in the Taiwan Strait. They fired missiles over Taiwan, into the Japanese economic zone, and simulated a naval blockade and air blockade.
''
''Burns also said the United States is not seeking to decouple its economic ties from China and a new cold war was not on the cards. But he added the US was going to compete with China "vigorously". Burns said the US would compete with China on technology and confront it on its World Trade Organization commitments, including its unwillingness to create a level playing field for foreign firms.
''
''Burns also urged China to resume dialogue with the US on military and climate change matters which China suspended after Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. China also angrily responded to US President Joe Biden's remarks that the US forces will defend Taiwan if Beijing tries to invade the self-ruled island, saying it will "strive" for the peaceful reunification of Taiwan with "utmost sincerity" but "reserve all options".
