The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai called for an urgent action to promote on a larger scale the complementary use of traditional ethno-veterinary medicine in primary health care for livestock. He stated this while delivering the presidential address in the International Conference on Ethno- veterinary practices held today at Thanjavur. He also reiterated that incorporating the traditional wisdom on livestock-keeping would help conserve the biological diversity with respect to the precious medicinal herbs. The Vice-Chancellor said that the share of India in Global Herbal market was meager. While the Global Herbal market was estimated approximately 60 million US dollar, India’s share was only 2 %. The Vice-Chancellor said that one of the main factors responsible for this backward trend was lack of scientific validation for their efficacy, quality, safety, potency and stability. For the development of ethno-veterinary medicine and creating awareness among the livestock farmers, a grant of Rs.18 lakhs by State Government and Rs.80 lakhs by Central Government were allotted to Veterinary University and Training Research Centre, Thanjavur. The three-day International Conference was organized by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to popularize the traditional herbal based ethno-veterinary medicines. A number of delegates from several foreign countries along with national traditional health have participated this conference.<br/>
