In Jharkhand, a state Urban Development Department survey has revealed that 18.50% of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families live in urban areas. Altogether 35 lakh BPL families are in the state of which 6,57000 live in urban areas. The survey was conducted on the basis of indicators used by the Central Government to determine poverty. The last survey of this nature was done in 1997 in the state.
