Uproar in Parliament over reservation for Sc & ST in govt jobs

The government will introduce a constitution amendment bill for reservation in promotion of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in government jobs in Lok Sabha on 22nd of this month. This assurance was given by Minister of State in the Prime Minister Office, V Narayansamy in the Rajay Sabha today. He said an all Party meeting will be convened on the 21st of this month. The Minster said, SC /ST Forum have also approached to the government in this connection.

Earlier, the House was adjourned twice on the issue. As soon as the House met for the day, the BSP Chief Mayawati raised the issue. She said it was discussed in the House during the Budget Session of Parliament. However, the all party meeting promised by the government did not take place. The BSP leader appealed to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, to introduce an amendment bill instead of convening an all party meeting.

Following noisy scenes, Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari adjourned the House for 40 minutes till Noon. When the House met after the first adjournment, Mr. Narayansamy assured the House that an all party meeting will be convened during the current session of Parliament to discuss the issue. He agreed with the members that the issue was discussed in the last session of Parliament and the government wanted to convene an all party meet, which could not take place. Several members criticised the government for not convening the all party meeting. Not satisfied with the reply of the Minister, BSP Members trooped in to the well shouting slogans against the government. This forced the presiding officer to adjourn the House for the second time on the issue for fifteen minutes.
