Uproar in Parliament over price rise issue

The Opposition today stepped up its pressure on the government on the oil price hike and government stood its ground, ruling out any roll back in fuel prices. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Ms Ambika Soni clarified that the necessity of price hike was explained in detail to the ruling party members by the Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee in a meeting this morning.<br/><br/>The Prime Minister has already ruled out possibility of roll back in the fuel prices. Party sources said another meeting is on cards to take on board all the UPA allies on the issue. Party sources maintain that the all UPA allies are with the government and the Trinamool Congress and DMK have softened their stand on the issue and they will not withdraw support on this issue. They are demanding roll back of the oil price hike.<br/><br/>The opposition parties remain united on the issue of roll back in the hike in petroleum prices. Main Opposition party BJP today said it is backing the concerns of the common man. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Party leader Venkaiyah Naidu said that the issue is not political and wants the government to take note of the rising prices. He said that though some of the ruling party allies are against the government on the hike, the opposition is not approaching any UPA partner on the issue. Earlier, NDA leaders met this morning to finalise their strategy on the issue in Parliament. Party leader Prakash Javadekar criticised the Prime Minister for his statement on price rise issue.<br/><br/>Talking on the same lines, CPI leader Mr D Raja also demanded a roll back in the oil price hike. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Mr Raja said it is not an issue of the opposition but an issue of the people.<br/><br/>CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said in New Delhi that party did not accept the argument offered by the Government to justify the hike.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent adds that walk out from the Lok Sabha by entire opposition last week when the hike was announced is an expression that Left Parties, NDA and other parties are on the same platform on the issue. Both BJP and Left Parties have launched the agitation in several parts of the country against the hike.<br/><br/>The issue of hike in fuel prices rocked Parliament today. Both the Houses were adjourned twice. Right from the beginning of today's session, the opposition members in both Houses were up on their feet demanding the rollback of the hike in fuel prices. The opposition members also trooped into the well of the two Houses and continued with their slogan to press their demand and both Houses were adjourned till noon. When the Lok Sabha assembled in the afternoon, the same situation prevailed and after the laying of the papers, the House was again adjourned till 2 P.M.<br/><br/>In the Rajya Sabha the opposition wanted the Prime Minister to respond to their demand in the House and did not allow the House to take up the scheduled reply of the Agriculture Minister on price rise.<br/>
