UPPCL employees’ strike ends

In Uttar Pradesh two-day strike by engineers and employees of State Power Corporation Limited UPPCL has been called off following an assurance by the Corporation that there will be no privatisation in any unit of the Corporation.<br/>AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that more than 50,000 engineers and employees of UPPCL had started work boycott from Thursday protesting the taking over of power distribution in Agra by a Ahmadabad based private company Torrent Power. The UPPCL has assured to review the decision to transfer the power distribution network to the private company on input- based franchisee model.<br/><br/> Meanwhile the UPPCL has transferred electricity distribution in Agra to private sector Torrent Power Ltd from Friday night. The MoU between UPPCL and TPL for handing over the power distribution of Agra and Kanpur to the private franchise was signed in May 2009.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that in the name of reducing the transmission and distribution power losses, the state government had decided to hand over the power distribution in nine cities including Agra, Kanpur, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Moradabad, Meerut and Aligarh in December 2008 to the franchise.
