UPPC to provide CFL on subsidised rates

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has decided to provide its consumers the energy saving Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) on subsidised rates. This is in accordance with the United Nation Framework Convention for Climate Change under Kyoto Protocol. The convention calls for minimising the carbon emission by phasing out the traditional incandescent bulbs. The Chairman of the Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam told our Gorakhpur correspondent that the four CFLs will be given to each household at the rate of Rs 12 per CFL as against their normal price of one hundred and twenty rupees per CFL. These lamps not only save energy but their carbon emission level is negligible as compare to normal filament bulbs. The scheme will commence next month from Varanasi, where 3 Lakh CFL will be distributed to the electricity consumers. Our Gorakhpur correspondent reports that many voluntary agencies are campaigning to ban the incandescent lamps as they emit tonnes of carbon di-oxide every year. The UNFCCC has chalked out a plan to completely phase out more than one century old incandescent lamps by the year 2012.A traditional bulb emits 5 times more CO2 and gives four times less light than a fluorescent lamp.<br/>
