Gopal Ansal surrendered before Tihar jail authorities today to undergo one-year sentence in the Uphaar tragedy case.

The surrender came after the Supreme Court refused to grant his plea seeking more time. The apex court was unmoved after Ansal said he had filed a mercy plea before the President and, therefore, he may be granted some time to surrender.

Earlier, this month, the Supreme Court had dismissed Ansal's plea and asked him to surrender by today. The court had dismissed his plea to let him off with sentence already undergone in parity with elder brother Sushil Ansal. The elder Ansal was granted relief considering his advanced age-related complications.
