The Prime Minister has asked the National Disaster Management Authority, (NDMA), to upgrade the safety measures at all the country's nuclear plants. Dr. Manmohan Singh asked the concerned agencies to put in place the world's best possible safety precautions and procedures to achieve maximum safety.Dr Singh gave these directions at a high level meeting in New Delhi to review the safety precautions at nuclear plants in the country. The safety measures are being undertaken by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and Department of Atomic Energy.Among other things, the meeting discussed the guidelines issued by the NDMA for management of earthquakes and tsunamis as well as nuclear safety issues. It also discussed response and rescue preparedness for any Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) emergencies.AIR correspondent reports, for CBRN rescue and response preparedness, the government has prepared a project for installing hi-tech radiation-measuring gadgets in 35 cities having more than one million population across the country, including New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. It has also procured four Hazardous Materials and one CBRN Surveillance vehicle. For tsunami-related damage preparedness, early warning forecast and preparedness would be upgraded. The sources said a National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Project is being prepared covering 239 districts in 22 States and Union Territories falling in high-risk zones. The meeting was convened against the background of the crisis that had developed at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck that country on 11th of March this year. It also took place amid concerns raised by the May 22nd terrorist attack at the Mehran Naval base in Pakistan's port city of Karachi. The two incidents have given rise to concerns in India and elsewhere about the safety and security of vital installations.
