Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh affirmed in the Rajya Sabha today that it was the UPA government which had introduced private companies in the crop insurance sector. <br/><br/>Replying to a short duration discussion on the farmers' distress leading to a rise in the incidents of their suicide in the country, the Minister assured the House that the government is very much concerned about their hardships. <br/><br/>He said, the problems faced by the farmers will be addressed in consultation with the concerned state governments. <br/><br/>Detailing the steps taken by the present government for the farmers' welfare in the last three years, he said, pulse production in the country has increased. As a result, the import of pulses is expected to come down by the next year. <br/><br/>The Minister added that oilseed output has also gone up simultaneously. He said, the country will soon be self-sufficient in oilseeds.
