The UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Advisory Council (NAC) . According to an official release, she will hold the rank and status of Union Cabinet Minister with immediate effect.Mrs gandhi's appointment comes four years after she quit the post in the wake of the office opf profit controversy..Her appointment will be co-terminus with the term of the National Advisory Council The term of the members of the National Advisory Council will be for a period of one year with effect from the date of their appointment which may be extended.<br/><br/>Under the special provision for a Member of Parliament appointed as the member of the National Advisory Council, it has been provided that he or she as the case may be shall not be entitled to draw any remuneration, allowances or perks as such member from the National Advisory Council other than the compensatory allowance . The Council first set up after UPA-I came to power in 2004 served as an interface with civil society with regard to the implementation of Government's National Common Minimum Programme (NCMP).<br/><br/>Mrs Gandhi resigned from the first NAC in March 2006 as well as her Lok Sabha seat in the wake of the office of profit controversy. She was re-elected to Lok Sabha from her Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh in May the same year.<br/><br/>The term of the first NAC ended on March 31, 2008.<br/>
