At a function to mark the fourth year of UPA II government and the release of the Report to the People in New Delhi last evening, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, in her address, came down heavily on the main opposition BJP for disrupting Parliament proceedings and preventing crucial legislations from being passed.

Expressing disappointment over the manner Parliament was prevented from functioning and fulfilling its constitutional role and democratic obligations, she said, the UPA has not been able to get crucial legislations enacted entirely because of this obstructionist approach.

Mrs. Gandhi made a fervent plea to the NDA and other opposition parties to come together and clear the passage of the Food Security and the Land Acquisition bills, terming them as non-partisan issues affecting the lives of millions of people.

Maintaining that the Prime Minister has been subjected to unrelenting hostility and abuse by the Opposition, Mrs Gandhi said, the UPA respects him and stands by him.

She said, the UPA has never deviated from its priorities and all states, cutting across party lines, were given unprecedented assistance from the Central government for development programmes and schemes for the poor.

She also said, the governance is now subject to strict transparency and accountability as a result of the laws put in place by the UPA government.
