UP polls: Campaign reaches peak for Phase 6

In Uttar Pradesh, the western districts have become a political hotspot, where top leaders are busy in hectic electioneering. The sixth Phase of UP Assembly elections will be held on February 28 while the seventh and last Phase, involving western and terai regions, will be held on March 3.The prominent leaders who held rallies on Friday include BJP President Lal Krishna Advani, UPA President Sonia Gandhi and BSP supremo Mayawati. Several star campaigners are today making their last bid to woo the voters in sixth Phase areas as Sunday is the last day of campaign.The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to conduct peaceful election in 68 constituencies spread over 13 districts of Saharanpur, Meerut, Aligarh and Agra divisions. More than 2.11 crore voters will decide the fate of 1,103 candidates, including 86 females in this Phase. This time the Congress has spared 33 seats for the RLD.The seventh and last Phase of elections will be held in 60 constituencies spread over 10 districts of Moradabad, Bareilly and Lucknow divisions. Over 1.8 crore voters will decide the fate of several political heavyweights in this election.Meanwhile, campaigning for the Assembly elections has gained momentum in Goa. The state will go to polls on March 3 to elect a new 40-member Assembly. AIR correspondent reports that senior leaders of different political parties are campaigning garner support for various candidates. The main tussle this time would be between the ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party and Maharshtravadi Gomantak Party combine. There are 215 candidates left in the fray for 40 seats locked mostly in the multi-cornered contests.
