UP introduces anti-ragging Bill

The Uttar Pradesh Government has introduced a Bill in the State Assembly to bring a stringent law to prevent ragging in educational institutions. If passed, it would be enforced from the next academic session. Under provisions of the Bill, a student will be punished with 2 years in jail and 10,000 rupees fine for being involved in the unlawful act. He will also be served with 5 year ban in admission in any educational institutions across the state. The guardian, parents or a student can lodge a complaint of ragging with the head of the educational institution within 7 days of the incident. After making a preliminary probe, the institution head, if finds the accused guilty will have to suspend him immediately and lodge a police complaint. Any forceful act by a student on the directives of senior students would be treated as ragging under the new law.

Uttar Pradesh has become one of the selected states in the country to bring a stringent law to prevent ragging, which has become a problem for the authorities during every new academic session of different educational institutions particularly engineering, medical and professional course institutions in the state.

Earlier following directives of the Supreme Court, the Government has taken several steps to check the menace of ragging in the campus.
