Uttar Pradesh government has sought immediate release of funds from the centre for repairing of the damaged national highways due to heavy rain and flood. The Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter on Tuesday to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in getting required funds released. She has also sent a DVD with footage of pot holed roads with her letter describing the conditions of the highways. She has said that 900 crore rupees were sanctioned for the repair and construction of national highways in the last financial year however, only 50 crore 50 lakhs have been released so far. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that as many as 43 national highways pass through the state. The total length of the highways is 6681 km, of which 3178 km comes under the state public works department. For the current financial year 737 crore rupees were earmarked but funds have not been released.
