UP govt drops sedition charges against J&K students for cheering Pak win over India in Asia Cup

The Uttar Pradesh government has withdrawn the sedition charges it slapped on 67 J&K students of the Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut for cheering Pakistan's victory over India in an Asia Cup cricket match held on Sunday. District Magistrate, Meerut Pankaj Yadav has confirmed that the charges have been dropped.

The UP administration informed the Union Home Ministry that it dropped the sedition charges after conducting a review. The Ministry had sought a factual report on the incident from Uttar Pradesh.

The case of sedition was registered under Section 124 (a) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown students of SVS University on Wednesday.
