The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a new policy for the acquisition of land and compensation paid to the farmers in the state. As per the new policy, private developers can directly acquire the land from the farmers and the government's role will only be that of a facilitator. Chief Minister Mayawati announced the policy while talking to media persons after holding Kisan Panchayat in the state capital Lucknow on Thursday. She said, such acquisitions could only happen with the consent of 70 per cent of the farmers in a given area.Meanwhile, opposition parties have dubbed the new land acquisition policy announced by Mayawati as a big fraud.Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to withdraw cases filed against farmers during their anti-land acquisition agitation in different parts of the state. Chief Minister Mayawati has directed officials to examine cases filed against farmers within a week and withdraw those lodged against the innocent people. An official spokesperson told AIR that the Chief Minister has also assured that the state government will pay compensation to farmers for the damages caused during Bhatta-Parsaul incident in Gautam Buddha Nagar district recently.
