UP govt announces new land acquisition policy

In Uttar Pradesh, the state government has announced a new policy for land acquisition and compensation for public service, urban and industrial authorities and private purposes. Under new policy government's role in acquiring land for private developers would only be that of a facilitator.Chief Minister Mayawati announced the policy while talking to media persons after holding Kisan Panchayat in the state capital. She said there are three parts of the policy. One for land acquisition for National Highways and canals while second part deals with the land acquired for the purpose of development by Development and Industrial Development Authorities.Third relates to the land acquired by private sector for establishing power plants and other industrial units. She said private categories developers can directly acquire the land from the farmers while the state government will act as a facilitator under new policy.The chief minister also said that such acquisitions could only happen with the consent of 70 per cent of the farmers in a given area.Claiming the new policy as the most pro-farmer policy in the country, Mayawati said the provisions of this policy should be adopted by the central government in its uniform land acquisition policy.
