In Uttar Pradesh, the State Government has decided to challenge the Allahabad High Court’s verdict regarding reservation for the Scheduled Tribes in the upcoming Panchayat elections in the state in the Supreme Court.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports the Panchayat Department officials opined reservation of seats for Panchayat polls is based on Census held in 2001, and after the creation of Uttarakhand in November 2000, the ST population was reduced. It was said the government has to challenge the Allahabad High Court order in the apex court to avoid legal complications after the Panchayat elections. A Division Bench of the court comprising Justices Sunil Ambawani and Kashi Nath Pandey had directed the state government this week to revise or modify the final list of reservation of seats of Gram Pradhans in districts where members of Scheduled Tribes have a substantial presence and accordingly reduce the number of seats allocated to the members of the Scheduled Castes. The poll process for the three-tier Panchayat has begun as the state Election Commission issued the notification on Thursday. The District Magistrates of all districts, barring Etah and Kanshiram Nagar, will issue the subsequent notification on Monday. Polls will be held in four phases. The election will be held on 11th, 14th, 20th and 25th of next month. Two observers each of special secretary rank will be deployed in all districts to ensure free and fair polls. The counting will take place on October 28 and 30.
