In Uttar Pradesh, the stage is set for Wednesday's polling in 56 constituencies of 10 eastern and southern districts of the state under third phase of assembly elections. Over 1.78 Crore voters will decide the fate of four ministers and 29 sitting MLAs, apart from a few stalwarts of different political parties.Altogether, 1018 candidates including 77 women are in the fray in this phase.The Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi party have fielded their candidates on all 56 seats while congress has left two seats for its poll ally Rashtriya Lok Dal.The election commission has made elaborate arrangements for peaceful polling. A total of 18374 polling stations have been set up for smooth polling.AIR Correspondent reports that this phase is important for ruling BSP as the party had as many as 30 seats in these areas in 2007 assembly elections.The BSP wants a repeat performance whereas other parties are out to improve their tally. In Allahabad South, the former Vidhan Sabha speaker and BJP candidate, Kesari Nath Tripathi is locked in fight with his BSP rival and sitting MLA Nand Gopal Nandi. Mr. Tripathi had won this seat five consecutive times before last elections but lost the fight to his BSP rival in 2007.The BJP Legislative Party Leader Om Prakash Singh has won last four elections from Chunar seat of Mirzapur. He is again a contestant from this seat. Other prominent candidates who are trying their luck include minister Indrajit Saroj from Manjhanpur, Rangnath Mishra for Mirzapur, and sacked minister from Mayawati cabinet Rakesh Dhar Tripathi, is contesting from newly formed Pragatisheel Manav Samaj Party.The election commission has made elaborate arrangements for peaceful conduct of poll especially in naxal infested areas of Chandauli, Mirzapur and Sonebhadra districts where strict vigil will be maintained through helicopters. The polling these areas will end an our before the normal closing time.Meanwhile, the scrutiny of nomination papers for seventh and final phase is being conducted on Tuesday. The candidates can withdraw their nomination till Thursday. Polling for 60 assembly constituencies under this phase will be held on 3rd March.The nomination process has been completed for sixth phase of elections. As many as 78 candidates withdrew their candidature till Monday which was the last day of withdrawal.A total of 1114 candidates are now in fray in sixth phase.The polling for 68 assembly constituencies under this phase will be held on 28th February. The counting of votes for all phases will be held on 6th March.The elections to the UP assembly is being held between 8th February and 3rd March in 7 phases.
