Hundreds of farmers from Uttar Pradesh are protesting in the national capital against the land acquisition policy of the Uttar Pradesh government. They are demanding increase in the compensation rate for the land acquired for the Yamuna expressway.Earlier yesterday, a delegation of farmers led by Congress General Sectaries Rahul Gandhi and Digvijay Singh met the Prime Minister and demanded amendment in the land acquisition act. Talking to reporters after meeting with Dr. Manmohan Singh, Mr. Digvijay Singh alleged that Uttar Pradesh government is misusing the emergency clauses in the Act to acquire land at very low prices. Mr. Rahul Gandhi described forcible acquisition of land in Aligarh and adjoining areas by Uttar Pradesh government as very unfair. The delegation gave a memorandum to the Prime Minister requesting him to write to states to implement the rehabilitation and resettlement policy being Pursued by Haryana government.
