In Uttar Pradesh agitated farmers demanding higher compensation for their lands acquired for Yamuna Express Way project went on an indefinite hunger strike on Monday to pressurize the state government in support of their demands.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports intensifying their agitation at least 14 farmers, including two women started indefinite hunger strike on Monday at Zikarpur in Tappal area at Aligarh. Leader of the 61-member Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, Manveer Singh Tevatia said it is a do-or-die situation for farmers. He said Samiti will, under no circumstances, hold any talks with any of state government officials except the Chief Minister Mayawati. He said a pre-condition for holding such talks was that an FIR should be filed on behalf of the farmers pertaining to the police firing on farmer on 14th of this month at Aligarh in which four persons including a security person were killed. Mr. Tevatia also sought 25 lakh rupees as ex-gratia for the bereaved families, 10 lakh rupees for severely wounded and 5 lakh rupees for minor injured in the police firing on farmers. In Agra farmers have announced that they would start ploughing the land if government fails to meet their demands by September 1.Meanwhile the Bharatiya Kisan Union which is supporting the agitation demanded that a central commission be appointed to review all problems of the farmers. The unions also demand the Centre to immediately initiate concrete measures for redress of farmer’s grievances.
