UP farmers agitation: BKU adamant on demand

In Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Kisan Union BKU leader Mahendra Singh Tikait has threatened to stall construction of Noida-Agra Yamuna Expressway if the demands of the farmers for higher compensation for their land acquired for the project were not met. Addressing a gathering of farmers at Tappal in Aligarh, he opposed the State Government's present policy of negotiating land deals through third parties. He said those who want to buy farmers' land should talk directly with them. Addressing the agitating farmers earlier, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh assured them that the party leadership was strongly in favour of meting out justice to farmers.Air Lucknow correspondent reports that farmers are continuing their agitation at both Aligarh and Agra districts. Work on the project is at stand still in two districts for last several days. In Agra, district administration is disbursing compensation as per enhanced rates and about Rs 3 crore were distributed on Friday. But most of the farmers are not in favour of receiving compensation less than what has been given to NOIDA farmers. Meanwhile, the State Government has announced a special package for farmers to settle down land acquisition disputes across the state but the agitated farmers have not shown any interest towards this package.
