In Uttar Pradesh, nomination process for the fifth phase of Assembly elections in 49 seats spread over 13 districts from Agra, Aligarh, Kanpur, Jhansi and Chitrakoot Dham divisions begins today with the issuance of notification by the Governor BL Joshi.The voting would take place on February 23. Polling in this phase would be held under the new delimitation with 11 new seats replacing as many old seats.The districts going to the poll in this phase are Farrukhabad, Kanshiram Nagar, Etah, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auriya, Ramabai Nagar, Kanpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Hamirpur and Mahoba.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that battle lines for phase two elections in 59 constituencies spread over 9 districts from Basti, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Azamgarh divisions have drawn with ending of withdrawal of nomination papers. A total of 1099 candidates are in the fray for polling on February 11. All major political parties of the state including BSP, SP, BJP and the Congress have fielded their candidates in most of the segments going for polls in this phase.Nomination process for phase three elections comes to an end this evening and a total of 729 candidates have filed their papers so far in 56 assembly constituencies. A total of 66 nomination papers have been filed for phase four polling. February1 is last date for nominations for this phase.Police has lodged a case against BSP MLA in Allahabad for violation of model code of conduct. More than 4000 FIRs have been lodged in connection with violation of model code of conduct for putting banners and posters and distribution of gifts and money to the voters to influence them along with misuse of red and blue beckon lights across the state.Surveillance teams and flying squads have seized more than Rs 30 crore unaccounted money till now. More than 6000 polling centers have been identified as sensitive.AIR Allahabad correspondent adds quoting State Electoral Office that more than three thousand illegal arms and about five thousand cartridges have been seized. Excise teams in Jyotibaphule Nagar, Kushinagar and Maharajganj district have seized about five thousand litre liquor and arrested eight persons in the case. About 2 lakh litre liquor has been seized from different parts of the state so far.
