UP: Curfew relaxed in Saharanpur in 2 phases today

In Uttar Pradesh, authorities have decided to relax curfew in violence-affected Saharanpur in two phases today. While curfew will be relaxed from 7 AM to 11 AM in Old City area, it will be relaxed in the New City area between 3 PM and 7 PM. Authorities told AIR that those venturing out of their houses to offer Namaz, even during the curfew hours, will not be prevented.

Curfew was relaxed yesterday for four hours to help people buy essential items following improvement in situation. Security forces have been asked to maintain a tight vigil during the curfew relaxation hours and keep a close watch on trouble-mongers to prevent any untoward incident.

The violence over a disputed piece of land in Saharanpur claimed 3 lives and left 33 injured on Saturday. 22 shops were gutted or damaged and 15 four-wheelers torched in the incidents.

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said those behind the incidents will not be spared and stern action will be taken against them. During a meeting with Punjab Assembly Speaker Charanjeet Singh Atwal, Akhilesh Yadav said the state government is committed to provide justice and security to all residents.

He said, adequate compensation will be given to those affected from the incidents.

In Delhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the situation in Saharanpur is fully under control. Mr Singh's comments came a day after he briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation.
