UP court awards capital punishment to 8 persons in honour killing case

In Uttar Pradesh a court in Mathura has awarded capital punishment to 8 besides giving life term to 27 others in a sensational honour killing of a couple and their friend.The trio were hanged to death and later burnt on the orders of a local Panchayat at Meherana village in Barsana area of district Mathura in 1991.Additional District Judge ADJ AK Upadhyaya pronounced this judgment on Wednesday after hearing the case for several years. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that those convicted were members of a village Panchayat and most of them over 60.The then Gram Pradhan is 95.Police had filed charge sheet against 54 persons and the court has held 35 of them guilty and acquitted only one. Of the remaining 18, 15 died during trial.The trial against three more accused was pending in Juvenile Court.
