After demanding creation of separate Bundelkhand and Paschimanchal states, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday shot off a second letter to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seeking carving out of 'Poorvanchal' comprising eastern parts of the state. This was disclosed by Additional Cabinet Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Vijay Shanker Pandey while talking to reporters in Lucknow. He said, the Chief Minister has requested the Prime Minister to give Centre's permission for creation of separate Poorvanchal state and expediting the constitutional procedure in that regard. She said, creation of Poorvanchal is necessary for better administrative management and keeping in mind the expectations and aspirations of the local populace.

The opposition parties have strongly opposed Chief Minister Mayawati's proposal to trifurcate of the state. Leader of the opposition in State Assembly and Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav has said that his party was never in favour of smaller states and division of Uttar Pradesh will not be in the larger interest of the country. In a statement released at Lucknow, Mr. Yadav has said that smaller states always invites interference of central as they seek central help most of the time for their development as smaller states lack the natural resources. Bhartiya Kisan Union President Mahendra Singh Tikait has also opposed creation of smaller states and instead called for their merger. He has said that any division whether that of family, property or state was wrong.
