In Uttar Pradesh, ruling Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Shekhar Tiwari sentenced to life in the murder case of PWD engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta in Aurriya town in 2008. His nine associates including three policemen was also been given life sentence by a special trial court in Lucknow today.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that engineer Gupta was lynched to death on the night of December 24, 2008 while resisting against extortion by the MLA. The MLA was allegedly collecting money for chief minister Mayawati`s mega birthday celebrations.The court has also awarded two-and-a-half year's imprisonment to Vibha Tiwari wife of MLA for hiding and destroying evidence. Besides, Special Additional District Judge Virendra Kumar imposed a fine of 68,000 rupees each on all the 10 convicts besides slapping a fine of 4500 rupees on Vibha Tiwari.Soon after the murder, an FIR was registered by the slain engineer's wife Shashi Gutpa at Dibiyapur police station in Aurriya. The case was transferred to a special court in Lucknow following a request by the victim's family members who alleged that MLA Tiwari was trying to use his undue influence on the Aurriya court.Meanwhile, on the request of the lawyer, the court later granted 15 days interim bail to the MLA's wife, who would have to approach the Allahabad High Court in this period for regular bail.
