UP and MP governments not utilised funds for Bundekhand: PM

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that funds allocated for development of Bundekhand region have not been actively utilised by both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh governments. Addressing a rally at Banda yesterday, he said the Centre had announced several schemes and projects worth several thousand crore rupees for the development the region. Expressing centre's commitment to the development of the region, he said he has already released 1,800 crore rupees to both UP and MP governments during last two financial years for different schemes in this region. An economic package of more than 7,200 crore rupees was announced in 2009 but these were not actively used. The Prime Minister announced a special scheme worth 200 crore rupees to provide proper drinking water to common men. He said, a bill will be brought in next parliament session for setting up a central agricultural university at Jhansi. He said, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded for the university. Dr. Singh also announced that the government has approved a scheme for up gradation of Jhansi medical college during third phase of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna. Earlier addressing the rally, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi alleged that anomalies have been found in the BPL lists in Uttar Pradesh. He said, several eligible families are missing from the present lists. He alleged that Uttar Pradesh government is not doing anything to rectify the anomalies. He also demanded the implementation of Right to Food to save people from starvation. AIR correspondent reports that people from most of the seven districts of Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh participated in the rally. Political observers say that Congress has kicked off its election campaign for next assembly elections in the state with this rally.
