Unseasonal heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh and Assam leave atleast 16 dead and damages to crops.
Nine persons were killed due to rains and hailstorms that lashed several parts of Andhra Pradesh in the past few days. Seven persons were killed in separate incidents of thunderbolt in Prakasam, Srikakulam and Warangal Districts while two were killed in a wall collapse. Standing crops were damaged resulting in huge losses to farmers. Initial estimates show that the crops like paddy and maize in about 10 thousand hectares and horticulture crops like mango in about 36 thousand hectares were damaged.
State governor ESL Narasimhan has directed the officials to take all steps to provide relief to farmers and asked the district authorities to send reports of damage immediately.
In Assam, seven members of a family were buried alive in a landslide after rainsin Karimgang district.
