The UN Security Council has called on Nepal's caretaker government andall parties to redouble their efforts for timely completion of the peace process. In a press statement, the Security Council has noted recent developments in Nepal’s peace process. This includes renewed efforts of the Special Committee for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of Maoist Army personnel, and the establishment of itssecretariat that will take forward this process. Meanwhile, the Chief of the UN Mission in Nepal Karin Landgren on Thursday met the Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) Prachanda and discussed issues relating to the peace process. Talking to newsmen, she said the UN mission has been encouraging the political parties to conclude the integration process at the earliest, prior to the expiry of its term on January 15.AIR correspondent reports, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe visited Nepal early this month to assess progress in the implementation of the peace process. After Pascoe's visit, the Security Council has asked Nepal's caretaker government and the political parties in Nepal intensify their efforts for timely completion of the peace process. Pascoe had told the Security Council last week that swift action to overcome Nepal’s political deadlock is required in order for the country to meet the January deadline to wrap up its peace process. During his visit in Nepal Pascoe had told the political parties and the government thatthe UN's decision to wrap up its mission in Nepal in January was final and had urged them to complete most tasks of the peace process before that.
