In Srilanka, Hundreds of supporters of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) on Wednesday took to streets demanding resignation of their leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. They blamed him for the string of electoral defeats in the past few years.AIR correspondent reports, with the main opposition of Sri Lanka, United National Party (UNP) in disarray and marred with factionalism within, a credible alternative to the ruling regime looks like a distant dream. Majority of the rank and file of the United National Party blame their leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for the electoral defeats the party has suffered since 1994. And today hundreds of supporters took to street demanding a change in the leadership. A satyagraha type campaign was organised by the rival faction led by Sajith Premdasa to pressurise Ranil Wickremsinghe to resign in favour of the deputy leader Karu Jayasurya. A crucial working Committee meeting of the UNP, where Ranil Wicremsinghe has the majority, is on at the moment. According to sources, the situation is tensed with heated debate amongst the rival groups on the change in leadership issue.
