Unity in SL opposition parties begins to wither away

The rare unity shown by the mainstream Sri Lanka opposition parties in the just concluded Presidential is beginning to wither away. Come April 8 general election, the main opposition the United National Party (UNP) and the ultra-nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Perumana (JVP) are all set to part ways and fight against each other. Ironically the man who brought them together, the defeated Presidential candidate retired General Sarath Fonseka is expected to lead the alliance floated by the JVP.The main opposition group United National Party (UNP) has decided to fight on its election symbol, elephant and is trying hard to woo several of smaller opposition parties that had thrown their weight behind Fonseka. It would indeed be an uphill task for the two opposition alliances in facing up to a buoyed ruling combine United Party Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by the re-elected President Mahinda Rajapaksa.More from our Colombo correspondent on the evolving political scene in the run up to the parliamentary election. The united opposition which rallied behind the former army Chief retired General Sarath Fonseka in the recently concluded Presidential elections was seen disintegrating no sooner the result for the hotly contested Presidential election was declared. While Ranil Wickremsinghe, the leader of the main opposition party chose to describe the election as fair , the JVP dubbed the Presidential victory of Mahinda Rajpaksa as the biggest computer fraud in the electoral history of Sri Lanka .Now the fissures are out in the open. The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has floated its own alliance and so far Mangala Samaraweera, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) led by Rauff Hakeem and the Democratic People’s Front (DPF) led by Mano Ganeshan have agreed to contest the upcoming parliamentary election under the UNP symbol. The JVP on the other hand has formed a new political front named the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) under the leadership of Gen Sarath Fonseka to contest the upcoming general election. Indications are the Alliance would fight under the election symbol Trophy supported by SLFP dissident Arjuna Ranatunga and SLFP (Mahajana Wing) General Secretary Tiran Alles. This time Fonseka is not only up against the Rajapaksa UPFA but also against Ranil’s UNP, with the backing of Mangala Samarweera, who was considered Fonseka’s campaign manager and other minority Tamil and Muslim party. Only time will tell how they will fare in the poll battle ahead.
